WEPA Empowerment Center cancels Three Kings Day event in Lebanon County

On Three Kings Day, children will not have toys because WEPA Empowerment Center Inc. canceled the event in light of the recent COVID wave in Lebanon County.

The celebration, also called “Día de los Reyes Magos”, takes place on January 6th. The feast commemorates the three wise men who traveled from far and wide bringing gifts for the baby Jesus.

Heavily celebrated in Spain, Latin America and parts of Europe, Three Kings Day falls on the 12th day of Christmas. Gifts are exchanged and a treat called “Rosca de Reyes” – a sweet bread in the shape of a crown – is also often made.

Maribel Torres, co-founder of the WEPA Center, said the event was due to take place Jan. 8 outdoors at two of the local housing units – Lebanon Village and Webster Manor – but thought it would be safer to cancel in because of the people involved.

She and Rafael Torres, the founder, are also in quarantine and she has yet to get test results.

“I don’t feel very good,” she added.

The Feast of the Three Kings is a big celebration in Hispanic communities, especially the Puerto Rican community, said Maribel Torres.

“It is our goal and our wish, especially the people who normally celebrate Three Kings Day that they continue this tradition with their children so that it does not get lost,” she said.
