Volunteers wanted tonight for the Manna Cafe emergency warming center

Through January 19, 2022 3:54 p.m.

CLARKSVILLE, TN – Rachael Hickman, Development Manager at Manna Cafe Ministries, is asking for volunteers to help run her emergency warming center which is being set up inside the ministry’s Refuge Building at 503 D Street .

“We open the emergency warming center when we expect temperatures of 32 degrees or lower throughout the night,” Hickman said. “It’s something Manna has been doing for many years. We keep an eye on the weather, starting in late fall/early winter.

Hickman says the facility will open tonight, beginning at 5 p.m. Anyone who needs this service just needs to log on between 5 and 7 p.m.

“Spaces are first come, first served,” Hickman said. “We have limited space, which tends to fill up quickly when forecasters call for several cold days in a row. Right now it looks like the warming center might be needed by the end of the month, but that depends on the weather.

“Really, we need volunteers who can work night shifts, two to three hour shifts, until 6 am. Without volunteers, we cannot open the center and provide the necessary care and warmth during this dangerously cold weather.

“We will provide dinner and breakfast for our overnight guests, snacks and coffee as well. They will also have the opportunity to take a hot shower.

“If you’re not able to donate time, warm clothes, socks and underwear, blankets, sleeping bags, really anything that would help make guests more comfortable during those cold nights, can be given away and is much appreciated.”

If you are interested in volunteering, contact Kim, Manna’s volunteer coordinator, at [email protected], or call (931) 801-0996.
