Roller bearings “will last ten times longer than their competition”

SKF has developed a seal for mounted tapered roller bearings that allows them to operate in contaminated environments for at least 600 hours, which is 10 times longer than any competitive product.

The E-type bearings are used when increased thrust load is required with limited axial movement in demanding applications such as belt feeders, screw conveyors, crushers, mills and mixers.

These machines usually break down for one reason: seal failure. By improving the performance of the seals, they can last much longer, thus extending uptime and increasing reliability.

According to SKF, users of these machines generally accept that contamination will inevitably lead to premature bearing failure. But by combining its expertise in bearings and seals, the company says that doesn’t have to be the case anymore.

New CR seals extend bearing life by virtually eliminating contamination ingress, even under harsh conditions. Seals offer several lines of defense against contamination. They use hydrogenated nitrile rubber which is resistant to both wear and tear and high temperatures, while a rubber outer diameter improves the static seal inside the case. Multiple sealing lips exclude all types of contamination including dirt, mud, water, sand and powder. The seals also allow the bearings to be relubricated without risking damage to the sealing lips.

SKF says new seals have significantly extended the performance and life of its mounted tapered roller bearings

“In mud and mud tests, our seal withstood over 600 hours without any penetration of contamination,” reports Eric Brubaker, director of product management at SKF North America. “Competitive products were introduced 50 hours or earlier. The seal performance exceeds that of our competitors by more than 10 times.
